Our Study Reveals the Effects of Simplified Information Interventions on SLM Technology Adoption in the Ethiopian Highlands

This study examined the effects of a simplified information intervention for smallholder farmers in the Ethiopian highlands using a cluster-randomized controlled trial. The intervention increases the number of adopted sustainable land management (SLM) technologies across a set of 15 targeted technologies, with particularly clear effects on composting and the planting of new crops.

The results also showed that the effects varied depending on local and household conditions, such as remoteness and land size. These findings suggest that low-cost information interventions can support voluntary adoption of SLM technologies but may be more effective when combined with place-based support.
