IPDRE organizes an International Symposium: “Changing environment and people’s lives in Mongolia”
Mongolia is facing challenges towards maintaining a sustainable society or building new lifestyles in the face of serious desertification, climate change, or change of the society.
The main goals of this symposium were to enhance the effective social implementation and contribute to the sustainable life in Mongolia through strengthening the linkages with Mongolian research institutions, surveying status of socioeconomic circumstances and systems of Mongolia, and application of humanity and social scientific approaches to the adjustments of local stakeholders’ needs based on the research deliverables of Tottori University’s research.
Certain level of understanding of Mongolian environment and lifestyle is required to fulfill these goals. In order to learn these important aspects of Mongolia first, we invited Prof. Yuki Konagaya from the National Institutes for the Humanities, a leading expert of culture and anthropology of Mongolia, as a keynote speaker.
Following the keynote speech, presentations on comprehensive topics such as socioeconomic situation and countermeasures to desertification in Mongolia were given in Part I. Presentations given in Part II focused on more specific and technical topics such as evaluation of effects of climate change on the grassland ecosystems and development of countermeasure methods.
Five scientists from three Mongolian institutions; Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS), the Institute of Geography and Geoecology (IGG) and Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IRIMHE); and four researchers from Tottori University gave very informative presentations which, we strongly believe, will enrich our future studies and enhance our linkages.
The symposium ended very successfully thanks to the active participation of more than 40 audiences.
