Tottori University delegation joins the UNCCD COP 14

A delegation of Tottori University (Arid Land Research Center [ALRC] and International Platform for Dryland Research and Education [IPDRE]) attended the 14th Conference of Parties (COP-14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification held in New Delhi, India from 2-13 of September.

The UNCCD COP has been held every two years since its very first COP was held in Rome back in 1997. As it is mentioned above, this year it was held in New Delhi, India joined by many delegates from the government of the contracting Parties, international organizations and civil society organizations.

From Tottori University Prof. Atsushi Tsunekawa (ALRC) attended the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) as a representative of government of Japan. In addition, researchers from ALRC and IPDRE hosted a side event titled “Enhancing Resilience and Livelihoods through Community-based Actions” jointly with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and discussed how the knowledge transfer and technology dissemination should be in dry areas and developing countries with UNCCD staff, experts and scientist after a few case studies of the “community-based actions” were introduced.

Although ICARDA and Tottori University haven been collaborating and learning each other’s activities for a while, this side event turned out to be a great opportunity for the both institute to discover new aspects of each other’s research projects.
Attendance to the UNCCD COP 14 was a very important opportunity for us to further develop our network and gain prominence at the global level as a sole Japanese institute that focuses on the dryland sciences.
