Distinguished Guest Professor. Theib Oweis makes a courtesy visit to the Governor of Tottori
Dr. Oweis is a Jordanian world's front-line researcher whose specialty is water harvesting and water management. He has been appointed to his post of “world's front-line foreign researcher” with MEXT Special Budget (National University Corporation Enhancement). As a Director of Water Resource and Soil Management Department at International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (“ICARDA”), he had put a lot of efforts into research, networking and research fund raising.
The meeting started with Dr. Oweis' self-introduction to the Gov. Hirai and presentation of his plans at the Platform: “I’d like to contribute to the growth and enrichment of research and education at the Platform with my expertise and experiences to contribute to Tottori University.” Dr. Oweis also stated that he would like to contribute to the people of Tottori, although indirectly, by doing practical researches which would help solve issues in neighboring country’s dry areas that affect Tottori. To Dr. Oweis’ statements, Gov. Hirai replied saying “I am saddened with the civil wars going on in the Middle East. However, I understand that Jordan is a very safe country. Japan needs to cooperate with Jordan to support civil war resolution. I believe that research and education will be important bases in resolving the issues.” He also stated that he was happy to hear Dr. Oweis’ clear vision and plans at the Platform and he is looking forward to the further success of the Platform.
At the end of the meeting, they enjoyed a friendly conversation on climate, geomorphology, food and culture of both Jordan and Japan.
